Template Tips & Techniques Guide

The Patriots page has a specific format style from NSDAR. At the top is an introductory paragraph, then follows the Patriot list. Below that is a table of States after the revolution (defines the states in the list). Below that is a table of service definitions for the chapter. This table must be maintained as you add/delete your Patriots.

The format for each Patriot entry is required by NSDAR to be:
Patriot Last Name, Patriot First Name, State Abbreviation(s) for State service, Patriot Service(s). Note: commas are required. Post nominals (usually Jr. or Sr. must be separated by leading/following comma and include the period)

The Patriot Ancestors list is formatted in three columns (really a table with three columns). Each column has a left border.

  1. Open the editor by clicking on the editing icon.
  2. Once the editor is open you will see three columns of sample patriot names as shown below.
  3. To add a patriot, highlight the first sample name and type in your patriot’s information. Repeat the process for the next name. After you add a new line, click “Enter.” Simply divide the number of patriots by three and enter the names in the columns. Try to make the columns as even as possible.

It is possible to maintain your patriots list via download from eMembership. This download comes in an Excel spreadsheet and must be manipulated to produce the desired list. Here are the manipulation instructions for those unflappable Excel users:

Delete Cols A, B, C (Member information)
Delete Pat_middle, Pat_Suffix, Pat_maiden (if blank); if not, consolidate data with Pat_first or appropriate column
Consolidate additional States with Pat_State_Served1 column; delete all remaining columns after consolidation
At this point, there are four columns of data: Pat_First, Pat_Last, Pat_Rank and Pat_State_Served1

In Column E2 place =UPPER(C2)
Promulgate down the column to Capitalize all the Ranks
Highlight the column (E) and with a right mouse click, Paste Special Values
Then delete Column C
At this point, the columns are Pat_First, Pat_Last, Pat_State_Served1, and Pat_Rank (now all CAPS)

Highlight the Pat_Last column (B) and Cut the column to be inserted before Pat_First

At this point, the columns are Pat_Last, Pat_First, Pat_State_Served1, and Pat_Rank

Sort on Pat_Last, Pat_First
Insert three columns of commas one each between the columns of data
At this point, the columns are Pat_Last, Comma-Column, Pat_First, Comma-Column, Pat_State_Served1, Comma-Column, and Pat_Rank

In Column H2 place:
=CONCATENATE(A2, B2, " ",C2, D2, " ", E2, F2, " ",G2)
Promulgate down the column
Highlight the column (H) and with a right mouse click, Paste Special Values

This completes the preparation of the Patriot list for placement into the Patriots page on the chapter website.
